Dowel Rail fences are usually about 4 feet high with three rails. The posts and rails are round, so are large dowels. The rails fit inside holes in the posts. Gates can be made from the posts and rails, or other styles of gates can be used such as metal stock-yard gates, picket gates, or slatted gates. Wire fencing can be added if desired. Often welded-wire is used so that a rectangular grid, such as 2" x 4" utility fence, prevents animals from slipping between the rails.

Dowel Rail is similar to Split Rail, only instead of split sections of wood the posts and rails are round. Dowel Rail also tends to be pressure treated and resists rotting for a longer lasting fence.
